LE.
Ellie Swann (LE) is currently making art in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
I am a neo-Appalachian folk artist. I am heavily inspired by the tradition of my Appalachian ancestry, with the modern influence of living and growing up in the city of Chattanooga. My work reflects nature, community, and an introspection of the body and the self. Alongside being an artist, I am fighting to end the cycle of waste and overconsumption. My motto is "everything we need already exists." All of my materials are either recycled or second-hand. The patterns, motifs, and colors for my work also all follow this motto. When I am hiking, I make small sketches of patterns that inspire me and incorporate those into my work.
Because I don't buy any new materials for my work, I tend to sit on projects until the material I need presents itself, either through the gift economy, second-hand stores, or pulling things from the trash. I think about my work as having some sort of cosmic intervention. I don't start a project when I want to, I start it when I get a sign from the universe that it is time. My art is introspective and thoughtful, while still having a level of intuition and spontaneity.
